Alberta Prevents Cancer

The Alberta Cancer Prevention Fund is working with St. Paul as a pilot community for the Alberta Prevents Cancer initiative.Alberta Prevents Cancer

  • The project committee working through a process to identify the gaps in our service in regard to cancer risks and came up with two areas to focus on – Nutritious Food Availability and Affordability and UV protection.
  • A number of projects were designed around these two gap areas and were rolled out in the community over the past two years.
  • Projects included:
  • Raised Garden Beds – Group Homes & SPAN
    Incredible Edible Barrels – Businesses and Walking Path where benches are located.
    Increasing presence of healthy food options, education and awareness by promotional recipe cards/salad in a jar concept – presented at 15 sites: worksites, 2 schools and seniors centres for a total of 335 participants.
    Portable Shade pop up Tents/Umbrellas for public use at both Town & Country Parks, Town of St. Paul providing shade structures over benches on Iron Horse Trail.
    Increase awareness of UV risk through community education – sunglasses, hats, protective lip balm and lotion.
